Just putting it out there that it would be nice to have smoke free common areas. New rental neighbor likes to smoke outside my front door and I would like to open my windows without having my children breathing in second hand smoke. To each his own, don't care if people smoke but some rules about proximity to other homes would be nice.

Sounds like a good idea. I have the same problem now and again with cigarettes, cigars and other. I don't smoke and don't mind that others do. I just don't care to have to breathe it.
I don't think we can legally isolate smokers to an area here. I do know that if tenants are smoking outside, more times than not, they do it because their lease doesn't allow smokers. This is how they keep the landlord from finding out at the end of the lease and not returning their deposit for cleanup. This being a violation of their lease agreement, may be a way to report the problem to the landlord to fix the problem. Not necessarily a friendly solution, but may be a good last resort. On the other hand, maybe talk to them and ask they walk a bit further from the building while smoking. In a friendly way of course.

I agree with you, but I agree with walker that there probably isn't much we can do. I often keep the window by the front door closed for that reason.

It would be hard to enforce a rule about smoking near the units; however, even the smoking at the pool bothered me this summer. A smoke free enviroment at the pool could be enforced by the life guard. I only took my kids up there once because honestly it's just gross that people sit there next to the pool and smoke. I would think the association could vote on making our pool smoke free just as the township has made the beach smoke free, businesses are smoke free etx. It would improve our community. I will try to approach my new neighbor nicely. I used to smoke 10 years ago (before marriage and kids) and I just cannot stand the smell of it now. Also not so happy with having to see the cigarette butts in the lawn/garden. Ugh.
